How long does Esperanto take to learn?

When it comes to language learning and fast results (two things that don’t often go together), Esperanto plays in a league of its own. Designed to be easy and consistent, this constructed language will have an English speaker (and everyone else, pretty much) speaking a new language in a matter of weeks. The hours go something like this:

  • Survival basics (A2) – 50
  • Everyday conversations (B1) – 90
  • Comfortable fluency (B2) – 190
  • Near-native fluency (C1) – 350

Crazy, isn’t it? You’ll literally be able to converse (albeit stiffly) after only a few short hours of study, something no natural language could ever offer.

Why so fast? Well, Esperanto is completely regular in its grammar; there are sixteen core rules that govern the whole language, and once you learn them, you’re golden. Plus, most of the vocabulary derives from Romance and Germanic languages, so many of the words will be instantly recognisable.

With the active (and awesome) Esperanto community hosting events globally and frequently, you won’t have trouble finding speakers with whom to practice. IJK is a fantastic annual event that allows you to immerse yourself in the language. (Have a read of this post, where I talk about my personal experience attending IJK in 2015)

These are just estimates however. For a number tailored to your specific situation, play around with the calculator above. That’s what we built it for 🙂
