How long does Persian take to learn?

Persian/Farsi might look intimidating to an English speaker (it’s the Arabic script that causes most of that fear), but is surprisingly more approachable than people realise. For an English speaker, the hours break down thusly:

  • Survival basics (A2) – 300
  • Everyday conversations (B1) – 500
  • Comfortable fluency (B2) – 1,000
  • Near-native fluency (C1) – 1,700

Persian isn’t Arabic, though some Arabic words have, over time, made their way into the language. Persian, unlike Arabic, isn’t a Semitic language but an Indo-European one, so it doesn’t come with the complexities and “foreignness” Semitic languages are known for.

The grammar won’t give you a migraine, either; it’s actually waaay easier than German! No gendered nouns, no cases, and most verbs are regular. What will eat up your study hours is the writing system – there’s no getting around that. Oh, and the vocabulary, which will be totally new to you. All doable, though, with time and patience.

People who are already familiar with the Arabic script will reduce their study time drastically.
