How long does Spanish take to learn?

When it comes to “easy” languages, they don’t come much easier than Spanish, at least for English speakers. The hours roughly break down like this:

  • Survival basics (A2) – 200
  • Everyday conversations (B1) – 350
  • Comfortable fluency (B2) – 750
  • Near-native fluency (C1) – 1,300

Why so relatively quick? Well, you’re getting a huge language discount due to the “shared ancestry” provided by Latin. Same alphabet, thousands of words in common (adding an “o” or “a” is usually the only differentiator, lol), and it’s easy to pronounce (rolled “rr” notwithstanding).

What will take you some time to get your head around is the verb system – it ain’t pretty! Heck, the subjunctive tense alone will probably eat up most of those study hours!

If you speak any other Romance languages, you get a serious head start. Know a bit of Portuguese, for instance, you’re laughing all the way to the language bank.
