Proverb Hobo App – proverbs in many languages
If you’ve spent any time perusing this site, you may have noticed that foreign language proverbs are kind of our “thing”. There’s nothing we love more than going on a proverb hunt in a random language, digging through old collections, and picking our favourites so we can share them with you lovely people.
Now, as fun as that is, it’s also pretty challenging deciding which proverbs make the cut. So many awesome ones get left out, time and space being major limitations.
So we got to thinking: what if we made an app with all of the proverbs we found on our hunting trips, all in one place? An app that lets you listen to every proverb, save your faves, and share them on fancy, themed cards across your social media accounts?
About the app
Proverb Hobo offers you proverbs from all corners of the world, in their own language, and with English translations. Tap for another random proverb, listen to it read aloud (optionally), save your faves to curated lists, and share them with snazzy cards.

Privacy policy

Proverb Hobo is a Language Hobo Ltd (“we”, “us”) app. This policy explains what happens to your information when you use the app.
The short version: there are no accounts, and we don’t collect any personal information through the app. Ads are provided by Google, which does collect some information, as explained below.
What stays on your phone
Your saved lists, settings, and the proverbs you were last reading are kept only on your phone. We never see them. If Android’s own backup to your Google account is switched on, Android may include them in that backup.
Content and audio
The app downloads proverbs, card designs and audio from our server hosted by Cloudflare. Like any website, the server receives your IP address in order to send the files and to protect against abuse. We don’t use it to identify you.
Ads
The app shows occasional ads through Google AdMob. Google may collect and use information such as your device’s advertising ID, IP address (which gives an approximate location), device details and how you interact with ads, to show ads, measure them and prevent fraud.
- UK and EU: you’re asked for consent when you first open the app. If you don’t consent, you’ll still see ads, but they won’t be personalised. You can change your choice at any time in Settings, under Ad choices.
- Everywhere: you can reset or delete your advertising ID in your phone’s settings (Settings, Google, Ads).

Contacting us
If you email us, we receive your email address and message, and use them only to reply. We keep emails only as long as needed.
Legal basis
We rely on your consent for personalised ads (UK and EU), and on our legitimate interest in delivering the app’s content securely.
Where information goes
Google and Cloudflare may process information outside the UK, under the safeguards the law requires.
Children
The app is meant for adults and isn’t aimed at children.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correct or delete your personal information, to object to its use, and to withdraw consent (Ad choices in Settings). As we don’t hold information about you through the app, requests about ads are best made to Google. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).
Changes
If this policy changes, we’ll update this page and the date above.

Ownership
The proverbs themselves come from public-domain sources. Everything else in the app, including its design, the card designs, the audio and the Language Hobo® logo, belongs to Language Hobo Ltd or its licensors. Language Hobo® is a registered trademark of Language Hobo Ltd.
Sharing cards
You’re welcome to share proverb cards made in the app, for personal, non-commercial use, as long as you share them exactly as the app makes them. You may not:
- crop, edit, alter or add to a card;
- remove, cover or change the logo or any other part of the card;
- use cards commercially (for example in products, merchandise, advertising or paid content) without our written permission.
Fair use of the app
Please don’t copy, collect or redistribute the app’s content or audio in bulk, or try to take the app apart.
If these terms are broken
Your permission to share cards ends automatically. We may ask for copies to be removed, report them to the platform they’re on, and take legal action where needed.
No guarantees
The app is provided “as is”, for learning and enjoyment. We do our best to keep proverbs and translations accurate but can’t guarantee them, or that the app will always be available or free of errors. As far as the law allows, we aren’t liable for any loss arising from using the app. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law.
Changes and law
We may update these terms; the date above shows the latest version. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and its courts have jurisdiction.
