It is recognized as the “national” language of Senegal. Estimates are that over 5 million people speak Wolof as their first language.

Wolof is closely related to Fula and Serer, all of which belong to the Senegambian branch of the Niger-Congo languages. The language is written using the Latin script.

There aren’t many learning materials available for those hoping to learn Wolof, unfortunately, so you’ll find our resources list quite short. We do believe, however, that with the right amount of dedication, you’ll be able to reach a conversational level.

Wolof Language Learning Books

If you’re a beginner, your first port of call should be a Wolof course book or a Wolof dictionary and phrasebook that will introduce you to the basics of Wolof, teaching you essential words and phrases that you can use to get around Gambia, Senegal or Mauritania.

While there aren’t any books that go into real depth about Wolof grammar and sentence structure, books that focus on teaching you how to communicate in the language will be invaluable.

Wolof Children’s Books

Beginners will find that reading children’s books in Wolof is a fantastic way to get comfortable with the language, learning new words in a natural way. Wolof kids’ books are written so that new readers can easily understand what they’re reading, helped in part by the colorful illustrations.

Wolof Movies & TV Shows

Another great way to familiarize yourself with the language and pick up some common Wolof phrases, colloquialisms and slang, is by watching Wolof-language movies, or movies with Wolof dubbing.

You’ll also hear Wolof spoken by natives, which will help you to pick up pronunciation much faster.
