Everything You Need To Learn Yiddish

Everything You Need To Learn Yiddish

Yiddish is a West Germanic language with about 1.5 million speakers, most of whom live in the United States and Israel.

The language has been heavily influenced by German and Slavic languages, due to the fact that the native speakers were originally from Slavic countries and later settled in regions where German and Polish were the predominant languages.

Yiddish is written with the Hebrew alphabet, though aside from a few loan words, the two languages have little in common.

Below you’ll find several language learning resources for Yiddish, which you can use to master this interesting language.

Yiddish Language Learning Books

You have a number of Yiddish course books to choose from to get you started in the language. For a beginner, a Yiddish study book is a great introduction to the language, and will teach you things like basic Yiddish vocabulary, Yiddish grammar, and language structure, thereby building a strong foundation upon which to later build.

Another important addition to your language library should be an English-Yiddish dictionary, ideally one that includes additional romanized forms of Yiddish words.
