Everything You Need To Learn Basque
Basque, in its own language “Euskara”, is spoken in the Basque Country, a region spanning northern Spain and southern France. It’s a language isolate—a language unto itself with no known relations to any other languages, and it’s spoken by over half a million people.
Language isolates are particularly difficult for learners, as there are usually no language cognates available to help them figure out a word’s meaning from its root. This does, however, make for an interesting challenge to language enthusiasts and those who love obscure languages.
Unfortunately, due to the small number of Basque speakers, it can often be hard for learners to find people with whom to practice, and, more importantly, resources for learning Basque.
Basque isn’t widely taught outside of the area in which it’s spoken, mainly because there’s very little interest in the language outside of the Basque Country.
That said, we have managed to find a few materials that should be sufficient to get you to a good level in Basque.
Basque Language Learning Books
Basque, like all languages, has its own grammar rules to be followed. Understanding these is essential for any Basque learner; it’s important that you familiarize yourself with the language’s rules as you learn to speak it. Making mistakes is inevitable, but you risk making them stick if you don’t learn the correct way to use the language.
Hence why you need at least one Basque study book to guide you through your Basque journey. These books will help you understand the rules and give you examples of how they’re used.
A good Basque dictionary will also go a long way in getting you to fluency. Throughout your studies, you’ll constantly be referring back to it, and building your vocabulary.
If building vocabulary in a quick and fun way would be helpful to you, consider getting a Basque puzzle book. You’ll pick up plenty of common Basque words, and they’re more likely to stick in your memory if you learn them this way.
Basque Children’s Books
Children’s Basque books are a fantastic way to not only learn the basics of how the language works, but also to build your vocabulary in an easy way.
Since there aren’t many Basque stories available for adults, children’s books could be an invaluable resource, at least during the early stages of your journey.
Basque Digital Courses
You’ll be hard-pressed to find a Basque course that isn’t in written format, because there simply aren’t enough people devoted to teaching this beautiful language. It takes a lot of money and effort to create a truly comprehensive Basque course, so most of the big digital language course providers won’t go near it.
Luckily, Udemy does offer at least one Basque course, details of which are available below. Udemy’s Basque course is the perfect way to learn the language from the comfort of your home, not to mention it’s cheap, you’ll get lifetime access, and you’ll be able to access it on any device.
