You might already be aware of the unfortunate lack of resources available for learning Basque. Currently, the language is still relatively unknown outside of Spain and France, where it’s spoken, so it stands to reason that there aren’t as many people teaching it online.
We wish we could tell you that on the YouTube platform this trend is different, but sadly, it’s just the same there. There are only a handful of Basque channels on YouTube, and most of them are in Spanish!
We’ve done our best to bring you the best among these scant offerings, as we believe you can still get a lot out of what is available. YouTube is a great place to start your language learning journey: it’s free to use, no two Basque channels are the same, and you can learn at your own pace.
We’ve also had to include the Spanish-language channels in our list, as they tend to be more comprehensive. So if you speak/understand even a little bit of Spanish, you’ll be just fine.
The Top 4 Basque YouTube Channels for Language Learners
Easy Basque
If you’re looking for an introduction to the Basque language, look no further than Easy Basque. This YouTube channel offers 13 bite-sized lessons that cover everything from pronouns to numbers.
Each lesson is presented by a native speaker, with accompanying onscreen text. Videos are 1 – 6 minutes long, making them perfect for squeezing in a quick study session whenever you have a few free minutes.
Though the channel hasn’t been updated in over six years, the lessons are still relevant and helpful for anyone interested in learning Basque. So dive in and start learning today!
My Basque Teacher
My Basque Teacher is the most comprehensive English-language Basque channel currently on YouTube.
It features over 25 videos, most of which are under 10 minutes long. Topics covered include basic Basque vocabulary, sentence construction, adjectives, and comparisons.
The native speaker presenting the lessons uses graphics and text onscreen, making it easy to follow along.
This channel hasn’t been updated in over 2 years, but there’s more than enough here to get started with learning this unique language.
Aprender Euskera
Aprender Euskera is the first of the Spanish-language Basque channels on our list.
With over 60 videos, it is regularly updated and covers a wide range of topics, including pronouns, common verbs, adjectives, animals, numbers, food, and word of the day.
The lessons are bite-sized, with most videos under 10 minutes, perfect for those with a busy schedule.
The huge downside to the channel, however, is that, unlike others on the list, there’s no audio to accompany the onscreen text, meaning you won’t be able to hear how things are pronounced.
Despite this, we still think it’s a great resource for those who understand some Spanish and want to learn the basics of Basque.
Euskara Satorra
The Euskara Santorra YouTube channel boasts the largest collection of Basque instruction videos of any channel on our list – over 130 of those bad boys!
This Spanish-language channel covers a wide variety of topics, including basic Basque vocabulary, pronunciation guides for tricky Basque letters, grammar, numbers, links to useful Basque media websites, and more.
Most videos come in under 10 minutes and are presented by a native speaker with onscreen text, much like something you’d find in an online class.
You’ll also find a handful of lessons in English, too, though the vast majority are in Spanish.
The channel creator’s unique selection of videos and clear teaching style make this an excellent immersion resource for beginners and intermediate learners alike.
