Everything You Need To Learn Georgian

Georgian is a South Caucasian language, and it’s the official language of Georgia where, according to studies and census data, it’s spoken by about 83% of the 4 million-strong population. It is also spoken in Russia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and by smaller groups of people scattered around the world.

Georgian is the only Caucasian language with an ancient literary tradition, thus making it one of the oldest languages in Europe. It shares linguistic similarities with the Svan and Mingrelian languages, though its grammar is entirely different. Georgian’s also said to be one of the most difficult languages to master.

Unfortunately, this difficulty is compounded by the fact that there aren’t a whole lot of resources to help you learn Georgian, so finding good beginner’s lessons and other learning materials can be tough.

That’s why we’ve put together this list of materials designed for beginners who want to learn Georgian. It’s not much, but there should be enough here to help you get started on your path to learning Georgian.

Georgian Language Learning Books

One of the best ways to get started learning Georgian is by grabbing yourself a good introductory Georgian course/study book. This will help you build a foundation in Georgian vocabulary and grammar before moving on to more complex stuff.

You won’t get very far without a concise English-Georgian dictionary, either, so it’s worth picking up one of those. Throughout your language journey, you’ll come across lots of useful words and phrases you won’t understand. A good Georgian dictionary will shed some light on them so you won’t be left in the dark.

As Georgian uses its own, unique alphabet, you’ll have to spend some time learning how to read, write and pronounce it, if you stand any chance of gaining fluency. Getting a book that teaches you how to write the Georgian alphabet will be invaluable.

Georgian Children’s Books

During your studies, you’ll no doubt want to practice the skills you picked up during your course, and what better way than to read some Georgian books written for children?

The great thing about children’s books is that they’re short, simple and full of memorable illustrations. This makes them perfect for beginner readers to practice their Georgian reading skills without getting overwhelmed or bored.

One or two of the Georgian kids’ books on this list come with links to the audio versions, too, which you can listen to as you read, and hear the correct pronunciation.

You’ll also see that most are bilingual English-Georgian books, meaning you’ll be able to read the English translation alongside the Georgian text. This is a great way to make sure you understand what you’re reading.

Georgian Fiction

More advanced reading material that will test your language skills and widen your vocabulary comes in the form of Georgian books written for older readers.

This is where you’ll start learning more complex words and phrases, colloquialisms, idioms, and other turns of phrase that native speakers use daily.

Though challenging, your Georgian reading comprehension along with your vocabulary will improve immensely once you’re done reading.
